98 year old Scone man faces attempted murder charge

A pensioner, Sylvester Nowak, from Scone, near Perth, Perthshire has been charged with trying to murder a police woman. He is believed to be the oldest person ever to be held in custody by Scottish police at the ripe old age of 98.

After a carer for the elderly Polish war veteran alerted police regarding his welfare he stabbed the female officer in the arm with a knife. Mr Nowak had worked as a welder for a coachworks firm in Perthshire and was a former prisoner of the Nazis during World War II.

Mr Nowak was now been sent to Murray Royal psychiatric hospital for assessment.
